"Congratulations, Mrs. Evans. The pregnancy is more than one month along"
The doctor's words kept echoing in my mind as I waited at the door for my husband to come home from work.
I never imagined I'd get pregnant with Nicholas's child. We always use protection whiling having sex every time. Even when he was too desperate to use a condom, he'd make sure I took the morning-after pill, watching me take it and double-checking afterward.
I knew the truth: he never wanted me to have his baby.
My marriage to Nicholas Evans was a secret. In the world of classic luxury, barely anyone knew that the most eligible bachelor was actually married. He still was the handsome, wealthy CEO of Evans Group, making him the target of every socialite's dreams.
Me? Wife in name, I was just his executive assistant.
Touching my belly gently, I tried to figure out how it happened. After wracking my brain, I remembered: about last month when we returned to the old mansion, we were both drunk, and Nicholas couldn't wait. We didn't use protection because I was supposed to be on my safe days, and he forgot to remind me about the pill afterward.
Who knew that one time would be all it took?
Suddenly, my phone buzzed. I got a text from Victoria Clifford, Nicholas's ex. It was simple but chilling, "I'm back, Mindy Brooks."
I froze instantly and felt waves of chill coming.
Since we were married, Victoria had been sending me texts that Nicholas knew nothing about. She claimed he had always loved her, that our marriage was just temporary, and that I was nothing but a toolman for his physical needs.
She said that when she returned, I would have to give way submissively.
But wasn't she supposed to be abroad? Why was she suddenly back?
Lost in thought, I didn't notice Nicholas approaching until I caught the intoxicating scent of his cologne. As soon as I could look up, he kissed my lips passionately.
His kiss seemed demanding and forceful, with his hand cradling the back of my head like preventing my escape. It was the kind of kiss that made you forget everything else, and I immersed in it. When he finally pulled away, I caught a hint of displeasure in his dark eyes.
"What's got you so distracted that you didn't even notice me, your husband, coming back?" he murmured before capturing my lips again.
His burning touch left me soft in the knees. In one swift motion, he lifted me and carried me to the living room sofa.
His lips traced down my neck and chest, with an overwhelming passion. Only when his hand slipped under my dress did I snap back to reality, pushing him away with my arms against his chest.
"Not tonight," I whispered.
His lips brushed against my ear. Using his deep husky voice, he said, "Why not? I've been thinking about you all day because you didn't come to work."
"I wasn't feeling well, so I had to take a sick day to see the doctor," I replied while I kept pushing him away gently.
He immediately stopped kissing my earlobe, while frowning with concern. "What did the doctor say?"
I glanced at him, then lowered my head nervously and lied in a low voice, "Just some stomach pain. Just take a break."
He leaned in to kiss me again, but I pushed harder this time. Nicholas's expression darkened.
"Just one kiss," he said frustratedly. "Come on, Mindy. I'm not some animal. You're sick. You think I'd force you?"
I looked down, very aware of the boner between his legs.
Nicholas pulled away with a frustrated groan. Since nothing happened, there were dissatisfaction and anger on his face as he stalked off to the bathroom. The shower started running moments later.
His phone in his jacket started ringing. After ringing several times, I glanced at the screen; it was Victoria.
My heart clenched.
With Nicholas still in the shower, something possessed me to answer it, though my hands were trembling.
A sweet, flirtatious voice came through, "Nick, thank you for the lovely time today. I knew you still loved me."
He'd been with her all evening?
Here he was, kissing me and saying he missed me, after being with his perfect ex.
I was completely stunned, but her next words made my blood freeze.
"Are you going to ask Mindy for the divorce tonight?"
