Nicholas wants to divorce?

Victoria seemed confused by the silence, "Nick? Are you there?"

My heart felt like it was being torn apart.

"Is this Mindy?" My prolonged silence must have tipped her off.

Startled, I heard the shower stop, so I quickly hung up with my hands shaking.

Just then, Nicholas got another text from his private attorney.

I saw it almost instantly.

"Mr. Evans, the divorce agreement is ready. After the divorce, Ms. Brooks will receive a settlement of $2 million check and two luxury properties."

The preview of the text disappeared after a few seconds.

At that moment, I felt like I couldn't breathe.

So Nicholas hadn't just been thinking about the divorce, he'd already had his lawyer draft the papers?

Nicholas came beside me, wearing only a towel around his waist. Water droplets traced down his sculpted muscles and his breathtaking features as a reminder of why everyone called him "God's favorite”.

He snatched his phone, checking it with obvious anger. "Were you going through my phone?"

"It wouldn’t stop ringing. Some woman called. I was about to hand it to you but she hung up," I lied smoothly, pretending not to know Victoria or see the attorney's text. "Who was she, calling so late?"

He froze for a moment. "Just a client."

My heart sank. As his executive assistant, I knew all his clients.

He'd just told such an obvious lie to cover up for his perfect ex.

Throughout our marriage, Nicholas had always been faithful and never got involved in any scandals.

During our salad days, I'd even tease him about whether he'd fallen for other women.

He'd toss me his phone to check, and once I was done, he'd held me closer, showing me in the most intimate ways that I was the only one in his life.

But now, his voice was cold, "Don't touch my phone again."

I’m totally disappointed and heart-broken.

After this uncomfortable moment, we ate dinner in silence.

My mind drifted to our past.

A few years ago, shortly after I became his secretary, we had a one-night stand. Then his grandfather suddenly fell ill. To fulfill his grandfather's wish to see him married, Nicholas came up with the sham marriage.

Despite countless steamy nights over these years, he never developed real feelings. Nicholas always remained distant. Even so, I was content being his wife in name only.

Well, of course I was, I'd been secretly in love with him for ten years, which he never knew.

Since Nicholas and I got married, his parents had been staying abroad, showing their clear disapproval. In the entire Evans family, only Grandpa Hank liked me.

Since the wedding, Grandpa Hank had been pushing us into having children, but Nicholas always refused coldly.

Today, after another one of Grandpa's attempts, here I was, actually pregnant.

I knew Nicholas didn't want it, but I couldn't even imagine having an abortion, nor could I secretly have this baby who'd grow up fatherless.

Maybe, just maybe, fulfilling his grandfather's wish for grandchildren would change his mind about the divorce. Maybe he'd even accept our child.

Despite knowing about the divorce papers, I was naive enough to try to save our loveless marriage.

I kept staring at Nicholas while touching my belly.

Noticing my hesitation, he said firmly, "Just spit it out."

"It's about Grandpa."

Nicholas got nervous immediately, "What about him?"

"Nothing's wrong. It's just... He asked about children again today," I said indirectly.

Nicholas got up and grabbed my arm. "Children? Where are the children? Are you pregnant?"

His emotions were complex and difficult to discern. Something flickered in his eyes. For a moment, I almost mistook it for joy.

But his next words crushed that illusion, "Impossible. You can't be pregnant."

"Why not?"

"I just know," he stated with absolute certainty.

I gave a bitter smile, surrendering. "You're right, I'm not."

Nicholas exhaled in relief, releasing my arm.

He seemed like someone who'd just dodged a bullet as if a child would be too catastrophic to escape.

Looking displeased, he asked, "Why bring up children then?"

Feeling my heart heavy, I swallowed my confession and simply said, "Grandpa just asked when we're planning to have kids."

"Just ignore him next time," Nicholas replied.

"Nicholas, why are you so against having children?" I couldn't help asking.

Something crossed his face before he said definitively, "You're not suitable right now."

Victoria's words echoed in my mind, so an unexpected courage took over me, "The Evans family needs an heir. If not me, then are you waiting for someone else?"

Nicholas's expression darkened dangerously. I knew I'd made him angry.

Just then, we heard a knock.

He no longer looked at me with fierce eyes, but sulkily turned to answer the door. However, when he opened the door, I heard his voice becoming suddenly gentle to avoid scaring the knocker, "What are you doing here?"

I turned my head and could see a beautiful woman in a wheelchair.

After that, she threw herself into Nicholas's arms.
