Chapter 4 He Brought His Ex-Girlfriend to the Office

Caught eavesdropping by Nicholas, I scrambled to pick up the fallen documents, too embarrassed to look up. At that moment, I truly felt like the shameful mistress everyone thought I was.

Victoria seemed perfectly able to stand today, quite different from last night when she was supposedly in a wheelchair for being too weak.

She clung to Nicholas's arm intimately. From the corner of my eye, I saw him frown right after noticing her grip. He pulled his arm away, and casually slipped it into his pocket. Victoria's expression flickered.

I wasn't naive enough to think he was trying to avoid Victoria's touch or spare my feelings. More likely, he just didn't want an outsider like me to witness their intimate moments.

Me, his wife, the outsider.

"What is it?" Nicholas asked coldly.

"Mr. Evans, there's a document that you need to review," I held out the file.

Instead of taking it, Nicholas pointed to his office, "Put it on my desk."

"You must be Mindy! I've wanted to meet you for so long," Victoria suddenly chirped.

What a charade! After all those threatening texts she'd sent me, now she's pretending this is our first meeting.

I ignored Victoria, and Nicholas remained silent too.

I dug my nails into my palm and managed to give a smile to Nicholas, probably a pitiful one.

"Won't you introduce us, Mr. Evans?"

Nicholas stared at me with no sign of emotion in his eyes. "Mindy, you're just a secretary."

I knew what he meant.

He was warning me that as a secretary, I shouldn't pry into my boss's personal business.

I almost found it funny. When he was horny and pinned me to have sex in the office, he never said I was just a secretary.

Besides, I’m not just a secretary, I am his legitimate wife.

Victoria playfully punched Nicholas's arm. "Nick, don't be so harsh. You're scaring Mindy."

Nicholas looked down at her tenderly and said, "Let's go."

He walked past me like I was invisible, with Victoria right after him.

As she passed, she flashed a smug smile and whispered so only I could hear, "He is mine."

Her eyes were cold and vicious. Before I could react, she'd caught up with Nicholas.

Watching them walk away side by side, I heard colleagues whispering about what a "perfect couple" they made. I didn’t even notice my eyes filling with tears.

When Nicholas and I walked together, all we got were nasty comments.

I guess someone like me, with no status or background, could never expect people's blessing when paired with someone like Nicholas.

I wiped my tears, placed the documents on the desk, and turned around to leave. Alan was coming in with breakfast.

"Mrs. Evans?"

When no one was around, Alan always called me "Mrs. Evans." I'd told him not to, but he insisted it was appropriate since I was Nicholas's wife.

"Nicholas hasn’t eaten?" I asked.

Alan shook his head, "No, Mr. Evans has been in a bad mood since last night. He declined several breakfast options."

I was confused. With all the time he spent with his sweetheart, shouldn't he be happy?

Alan hesitated before asking, "Did you have a fight?"

I just gave a small smile, saying nothing.

Fighting with your husband only to watch him walk away with another woman. My marriage couldn’t be any more of a failure.

But Alan was genuinely smiling as he held up the food containers. "Mrs. Evans, I think he wants your cooking. I bought the ingredients you usually use."

"Victoria didn't cook for him?"

I regretted how bitter that sounded the moment it left my mouth.

Alan seemed surprised for a moment, probably wondering how I knew about Victoria.

He said puzzled, "What do you mean? Why would Ms. Clifford cook for Mr. Evans? In fact, he spent all night at the office."

Now that got me confused. Nicholas had left with Victoria last night. Didn’t he spend the night with her?

I'd assumed that after his failed attempt, he'd seek satisfaction with Victoria.

"Ms. Clifford just arrived at the office," Alan added. "She came without an appointment, and Mr. Evans seemed quite unhappy about it."

I scoffed, "Really? You must be wrong."

He couldn't have been unhappy; he only looked unhappy when he just saw me.

He probably couldn't wait to tell the whole world about getting back together with Victoria.

Nicholas returned shortly after. We managed to avoid each other all day. He seemed busy.

In the past, when he was tired from a long day's work, he'd call me in under the pretense of work, and we would always end up kissing and making love.

Lost in these thoughts, I was startled when long fingers started tapping my desk.

Nicholas looked down at me and said, "Come with me."

I set aside my work and followed him slowly. The moment we got into his office, he pushed me against the door.

His hot lips immediately brushed against mine.
